Sauna and cold water studio, Ōamaru

Hot sauna, cold plunge, done properly

We started this up after years of dragging chilly bins to the harbour for a cold dip and wanting somewhere warmer to sit afterwards. It is a simple set up in an old wool store off Tyne Street, and most people who come once end up on a pass.

The round

The round, step by step

Heat · 1 Sauna, first sit

Sit in the sauna 8 to 10 minutes if you are new, up to 15 if you know your limit.

Cold · 2 Cool down

Step outside for 2 minutes and let your skin temperature drop before the plunge.

Cold · 3 Ice bath

In for 30 to 45 seconds your first time, seasoned folk go 90 seconds to 2 minutes.

Heat · 4 Warm up walk

Walk around for a couple of minutes, get your breathing back to normal.

Heat · 5 Sauna, second sit

Back in for 10 minutes beginner, 15 to 20 for those used to it.

The room

Who runs it

It is me, Craig, and a couple of part time hosts who all use the place ourselves most weeks. We keep the sauna wood fired and the plunge fed straight from bore water, so both feel a bit different to the electric set ups you get in the cities. No music, no phones by the tub, just the round.

Before you get in

Before you get in

Heat and cold are strong. Take them at your own pace.
  • Feeling dizzy or unwell — Get out and sit down, tell a host straight away.
  • Pregnant, heart condition, or on medication — Talk to your doctor before doing hot and cold rounds.
  • Had alcohol — Do not use the sauna or plunge, come back another day.
  • Unwell with a cold or fever — Skip it this week, your body is already working hard.

“I was sceptical about the cold bath but the staff talk you through it and nobody makes you feel soft for only doing 20 seconds the first time.”
